1929 |
|

Although Hugo has none of the requested qualifications, he needs a job so badly that he rushes to be the first applicant, and he gets the job. When strange events begin to happen, Hugo tells an inlaw, Smith, about the strange things, and Smith tells Hugo that the investor is close to completing a major project for the country's defense industry. Smith and Hugo conclude that Hugo is being set up to be blamed when the invention disappears. Hugo keeps the invention from being stolen and falls in love. Author Wentworth's usual excellent writing, but the plot is bland. |
Wesson, Marianne |

Lawrence, Leavenworth, Kansas City, Medicine Lodge, Topeka, KS |
1889 and following years |
|
Not fiction. The author is a law professor at the University of Colorado Law School. She carefully examines all available evidence about a case that happened in Kansas in 1889. A Lawrence man told his wife he was heading to Western Kansas to try to find some land where he could raise horses. While he and a companion were camped near Medicine Lodge, his companion rode rapidly to the nearest farm to report that the Lawrence man had accidentally killed himself while unloading his rifle. However, when his widow filed for his insurance, it was discovered that her husband had taken out massive amounts of life insurance, and the insurance companies refused to pay. Book follows the case through court hearings, documents, a Supreme Court letter, and all available sources to find out what really happened. |

Phoebe finds Miss Drake still alive, and Miss Drake asks Phoebe to find the Drake treasure and gives Phoebe what information she knows about the treasure. Miss Drake's heir, her nephew Graham Burke, asks Phoebe to remain at Avondale to finish the ceiling and to help him find the treasure.
