Mrs. Nilsson is the stingy and prim owner of Briarwood House in Wathington, D.C.'s Foggy Bottom area. She rents rooms to six young women. Most of these women work for the US government, but one, Bea Veretti, is a PE teacher in a local middle school. The Briarwood House residents each go their own way until a seventh tenant, Grace Marsh, moves in. Grace is really Galina Stepanova, a Soviet-trained spy sent to spy at Edwards Air Force Base. Grace hated the cruelty and starvation in Stalin's Soviet Union, so as soon as she had the opportunity, she disappeared and surfaced as Grace Marsh, who works part-time at the library and part-time in a steno pool. After Grace begins to hold Thursday night dinners in her room--Thursday being the night Mrs. Nilsson plays bridge--with each attendee bringing some food item, each of the residents begins to unravel some problem in their life--either aided by Grace or by other residents.
When a Soviet assasin breaks into Briarwood House to dispose of Galina, Grace and Bea kill him, and the other residents convince the police that someone from outside dunnit.
